Top Moving Trends of 2025

We’ve officially rang in the new year, and 2025 is upon us. The new year brings countless exciting opportunities and adventures to look forward to, and for many people, 2025 will bring relocations to new homes. But where are Americans heading? What trends will define this year’s moves?

If you’re interested in relocating in the coming year, we’ve got you covered with the projected trends. Discover where trends took people in 2024 and where they’re heading in 2025—and maybe even find the right destination for your upcoming relocation!

  • Interest in Florida

Over the years, Florida has remained one of the top destinations for movers across demographics. Although the state is known for being a haven for retirees looking to spend their retirement years in the sun, the Sunshine State attracts people of all ages, whether it’s young professionals or families.

Florida tops the list of places Americans want to move to for people in the Northeast, Midwest, and South regions of the United States. MoveBuddha’s 2025 moving survey found that Florida is the #1 state people want to move to in 2025, which is no surprise considering the continued popularity of the state. People continue to seek warm beaches and sunny skies in 2025!

  • Westerners More Likely to Move

Who wants to move in the new year? Surveys have shown that people in the Western regions of the United States have the highest likelihood of moving in 2025, with 57% of residents in Western states having no intention of moving. For comparison, 71% of Northeastern respondents had no intention of moving. Despite the higher interest in moving for Western residents, they are the least likely to leave their current state. These results tell us that we can expect the most moves to occur in the Western part of the country, but these people will likely stay within state lines.

  • Suburbs Remain Popular

Are people gravitating toward urban, suburban, or rural areas in 2025? Most movers want to head to the suburbs, with moveBuddha finding that 29% of survey respondents would prioritize moving to suburban areas, followed by 21% for rural areas and 14% for major metropolitan areas. These results show a continued interest in comfortable suburban living over all other alternatives.

  • Fewer People Moving

Although Americans still have an interest in relocating, the number of people who are actually moving is much lower. However, this doesn’t come as a surprise, as American moves have been declining for over 40 years. Experts attribute this to factors such as the prevalence of remote work, aging population, increased cost of living (and cost of moving!), and more young people living at home. These aspects are causing more and more people to stay in the same place, rather than following through with their desire to move.

  • Sights Set on South Carolina

Since 2023, people have set their sights on South Carolina as a state they want to move to. 2024 was the second year in a row with South Carolina ranking as the top move-to state. This is determined by the ratio of moves in-to-out, and the Palmetto State’s ratio topped the list with 205 in to 100 out. This was a slight drop from the previous year, but interest still shows that people are looking to move to South Carolina in 2025.

  • Affordability Matters

With such a high cost of living, affordability is king. People are seeking the most cost-effective places to live, and in 2025, we can expect continued emphasis on affordability. In fact, 87% of people surveyed reported that a lower cost of living and affordable housing would motivate them to relocate. This clearly speaks to the current priorities for Americans. Aside from finances, Americans are also prioritizing quality of life, with factors such as lower crime rates and outdoor lifestyles ranked high among reasons to move.
